Friday 3rd August 2016 – From the Trades House of Glasgow Press release by Elaine Stewart Nicol, Stuart Campbell is presented with the Craftex Gold Medal by Deacon Convenor Ruth Maltman, picture by Peter Devlin.
I was awarded the Gold Medal at the 21st Craftex awards and exhibition, the annual Trades House of Glasgow initiative, showcasing the best traditional and modern crafts skills honed in the city’s colleges. My piece was completed as the Reproduction project for the HND Furniture Restoration at City of Glasgow College and also won the Furniture Advanced award, sponsored by the Incorporation of Wrights. The piece is a reproduction of a stunning sculptural design by American maker Seth Rolland.
These are my second and third Craftex awards following my Instruments Advanced award in 2014 for my daughter Caitlin’s OM Acoustic named ‘Mario the Spalted Silverado’ . I joked with my then lecturer Paul Hyland that it won on best exhibit title. When Trades House PR, Elaine Stewart Nicol spoke to me of the award she said ‘this is a big thing, it could potentially change your life’, it already had, the morning of the photo shoot I had re-learned to use two tools, a razor and an iron.
